Vitebsk, Smolensk develop new tourist route on 1812 war

VITEBSK, 8 November (BelTA) – Travel agencies of Vitebsk and Smolensk are working on the first transboundary tour “Patriotic War of 1812: 200 years later,” BelTA learnt from the physical education, sport and tourism department of the Vitebsk Oblast Executive Committee informed BelTA about development of The journey will take visitors to Vitebsk and Smolensk Oblasts, the sites of the most important battles with the French Army. The Belarusian part of the journey will feature Polotsk, Rossony and Beshenkovichy Districts and Vitebsk. Tourists will be able to see monuments and memorials honoring the victory over the enemy and heroic battles and to enjoy the animated part of the trip. One of the journey destinations will be the school museum at Klyastitsy, which has a unique display devoted to the victory of Russian troops under command of Lieutenant General Wittgenstein over superior French forces under command of Marshal Oudinot. This battle put an end to Napoleon’s army advance on St. Petersburg, the capital of the Russian Empire. The new project involves Belarusian archive scientists and local historians. Before the route is unveiled, it will appraised by the National Academy of Sciences, the Sport and Tourism Ministry and the Culture Ministry. The Vitebsk Oblast Executive Committee noted that the transboundary route devoted to the war of 1812 will become the first but not the last project developed in cooperation with Russian travel companies. Now Vitebsk and Smolensk are discussing a new international tourist route for youth groups and school students.
